  MEMBER PROFILE

Beijing Forestry Society (BFS)

Being the oldest forestry NGO in China, the Beijing Forestry Society (BFS) was established in 1955 by a group of foresters in Beijing, and it currently consists of over 2800 members. The membership brings together a rich variety of specialists working in diverse forestry related fields with the common goals of promoting sustainable forestry and community development.

BFS has initiated restoration projects which blend together objectives ranging from supporting local economies and livelihoods, to developing non-timber forest products, to water conservation and improving people’s environmental awareness. Since the 1990s, BFS has also been promoting international exchanges and communications, introducing new concepts and helping open Beijing to the global environmental community. BFS has built international partnerships with organizations including IUCN, WWF, FSC, Forest Trends, and the Canadian Institute of Forestry, producing relevant and innovative environmental programs for millions of people in Beijing.
BFS, IUCN China, and other organizations jointly initiated the Partnership for Mega-city Watershed Protection (PMWP) in 2013 and the China Mega-city Water Fund (CMWF) in 2015, to engage more stakeholders and mobilize more resources to improve conservation of water source areas.

BFS coins the term of “forest culture” in Beijing to describe all its activities which promote the aesthetic, educational and recreational values of forests and nature together. BFS has led millions of everyday Beijing people to connect with the natural environment through education and experiences. BFS’s initiatives have brought children, youth, families and an exciting range of green citizenship groups to various public programs in Beijing forests, ranging from literature, concerts, arts and craft, to school activities and youth volunteer training. BFS is also taking the lead in innovating forest therapy in Beijing to recognize and promote the physical and psychological benefits of connecting people with forests.
