Syrian Society for Conservation of Wildlife (SSCW)

SSCW operates within Syria and in cooperation with the national authorities for conserving Biodiversity components (terrestrial and aquatic) in a balanced and sustainable manner to link that with local development programs within a constructive and participatory approach.
Strategic Goals
-Promoting SSCW as a pioneering and effective NGO in Biodiversity conservation.
-Completing institutional capabilities and building an effective network of members and volunteers.

Purpose of Organization:

SSCW is a pioneer organization that works for a sustainable wildlife within a frame of solid relations and partnerships to the development of the society.

GEF/SGP involvement:

Improving the Conservation Status of Globally Threatened Birds at Al-Jaboul Wetland-Syria (2008-2014).

Experience:

Highlights of some of SSCW achievements:
1. SSCW had published the first National Field Guide for Birds in Syria (Birds of Syria -Field Guide) 2008.
2. Report on the hunting situation in Al-Jabboul wetland area in the course of working towards “Improving the Conservation Status of Globally Threatened birds at Al- Jabboul Wetland” through Promoting, Developing and Implementing Sustainable Hunting Practices (A Project funded by SGP- GEF).
3. Management Plan for Al-Jabboul Protected Area as a result of “Conservation of Biodiversity through Eco-tourism” Project. (A Project initiated and funded by Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation -SDC 2007-2010). Furthermore, SSCW worked in cooperation with the Ministry of State for Environment Affairs to combat pollution at the Al-Jabboul wetland site.
4. Advocacy for a modern national Law for Hunting.
5. Updating the National Syrian IBAs after recent assessment in 2012-2013.
6. SSCW established the first bird ringing station in Syria, and been authorized to run the national ringing scheme and lead the birds ringing process at the national level.
