SUSTAINABILITY FOR SEYCHELLES (S4S)

S4S was formed by a group of people who are committed to the idea of sustainability, and believe that citizens have a vital role to play in helping Seychelles shift towards this ideal. Today S4S is a formally registered NGO and an accredited member of CEPS, Seychelles’ umbrella organisation for NGOs, and is overseen by a volunteer board of directors. The board is charged with the responsibility of guiding our strategic development towards becoming a self-sustaining and efficient organisation that contributes tangibly to the promotion of sustainability in Seychelles. S4S currently has two full time staff members and several part time staff including student interns and occasional project consultants

Purpose of Organization:

S4S’ mission is to work towards social, ecological, economic & technological sustainability, and to inspire, inform & enable people to live, work & play in ways that benefit human & natural communities.
Our objectives are:

•       Create Partnerships with government, parastatals, the private sector & NGO’s to promote sustainable practices
•       Develop education & training programmes for more sustainable lifestyles
•       Inspire people to adopt sustainable lifestyles via success stories and best practices demonstrations
•       Promote renewable energy technologies and the efficient use of energy
•       Promote use of appropriate technology to mitigate greenhouse gases
•       Engage in research that promotes social & ecological sustainability in Seychelles & other island states

GEF/SGP involvement:

2010-2012: Promoting Rainwater Harvesting on La Digue Island
2013-2017: Engaging Civil Society in Sustainable Waste Management (strategic project for USD 150,000)

Experience:

Chemicals and Waste: Through our SGP project we have been able to contribute to the development of new policies and laws related to waste management, as well as participate in research informing those policies.
Climate Change Mitigation: We developed an education strategy for promoting PV Solar and have participated in several actions to promote renewable energy and energy efficiency, relating to two national GEF funded energy projects in Seychelles.
Biodiversity: We partnered with three hotels to help them implement projects to mainstream biodiversity conservation into their operations, this was under a national GEF funded Mainstreaming Biodiversity project implemented by the government of Seychelles.
